I'm a Clayton's Judge!

Tuesday 9 March 2010

Canberra

I'm absolutely thrilled to be a judge for the Clayton's Book Awards for Children's Book Council of Australia, ACT branch. I'll be judging the Young Reader's category - choosing just 6 titles from the hundreds of exciting titles that were entered in this year's Book of the Year Awards.

The Clayton's Book Awards are a fun night for CBCA members to corral and celebrate Australian books in the running for the annual Awards (winners announced 20 August 2010). Judges choose their shortlisted 'picks' for their category and then present to other members the reasons behind their choice.

It's always fun to see which books then make it into the real shortlist, which will be announced on 30 March 2010.

Seeing as though I can't possibly nominate my own book - Riley and the Dancing Lion, which is in the running - I'm hoping that perhaps my guess for shortlisted books is a little off the mark!

Book Readings at Government House Open Day

Sunday 14 March 2010

10am - 4pm

Government House, Canberra

The Smith Family will again be hosting their annual, major fundraising event at Government House in Yarralumla, Canberra. The event is a family fun day out with all proceeds going to The Smith Family - an organisation that provides assistance for disadvantaged students and families to reach their full potential through a suite of learning programs.

There will be tours of Government House and gardens, an art show, centre stage and roving entertainment, activities for children, and demonstrations and displays. Last year over 8,000 people attended this unique experience.

I am so honoured to have been asked to read my books at the Storytelling Marquee (along with the illustrious Ingrid Jonach). This part of the day is aimed at involving children and encouraging them to read and write their own stories - or to simply enjoy literature.

For a day of fantastical family ambience, culture, food, singing, pony rides and flat out fun, do come along. I will be reading at 11am and at 12pm. Hope to see you there!

For more information, call 02-6283 7602.

The Riley Series Article at Suite 101

Huge thanks to the amazing Susan Whelan of Reading Upside Down who has done a remarkable article on my works so far, focusing on the Riley series of books. You'll find this article at Suite 101, where Whelan posts brilliant articles and reviews as a World Literature Feature Writer.

This talented writer is a true lover of literature, particulary children's books and you can check out her fabulous reviews and other work at Reading Upside Down and Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!, both of which should really be on your literary blog roll.

Thanks, Susan!

Riley and the Curious Koala

Following in the Riley series of travel adventure books, Riley and the Curious Koala takes our little aviator on a journey around the beautiful landmarks of Sydney, in search of a strange and elusive fuzzy creature.

With stunning black and white photos of Sydney's beaches and glorious harbour, even in the torrential rain, this whirlwind trip showcases this gorgeous city at its best.

Riley and the Curious Koala is due for release this November 2010, illustrated once again by the illustrious Kieron Pratt. It is the third book in the very popular Riley travelogue series for little ones.
